What Causes High Calcium Hardness in a Pool?

Short answer

High calcium hardness is usually caused by hard fill water, repeated use of calcium hypochlorite shock, and evaporation that concentrates minerals left behind. Plaster and grout also leach calcium into the water. Target range is 200 to 400 ppm, and above 400 ppm scaling and cloudiness begin.

High calcium hardness comes from three main sources: hard fill water, calcium hypochlorite shock, and evaporation concentrating what is already in the pool. Plaster and grout surfaces contribute as well, especially in the first year.

Target calcium hardness is 200 to 400 ppm for plaster pools and 175 to 300 ppm for vinyl and fiberglass. Above 400 ppm, scale and cloudiness start.

The four real causes

Hard fill water. Whatever calcium is in your tap water arrives with every top-off. If your source water is 250 ppm, you cannot get the pool below that without treating the fill water or using a different source.

Cal-hypo shock. Calcium hypochlorite is roughly 65 to 73 percent available chlorine and the rest is largely calcium. Every pound you add to 10,000 gallons pushes calcium hardness up by about 7 ppm. Shock weekly for a season and the number climbs noticeably.

Evaporation. Water leaves, minerals stay. Then you top off with more mineral-bearing water. In a hot climate this is a one-way ratchet, and it is the cause most owners never think about.

Plaster and grout leaching. New plaster releases calcium for months as it cures. Aggressive water (low pH, low alkalinity or low calcium) accelerates it by actively dissolving the surface.

What high calcium looks like

  • Rough white or gray scale at the waterline and on tile
  • Cloudy water that will not clear with filtration or clarifier
  • Scale inside the heater exchanger, which kills efficiency and eventually the heater
  • Rough patches on plaster
  • Filter media clogging faster than normal
  • Salt cell plates coated in white buildup

Scale is not just cosmetic. Inside a heater or a salt cell it is a repair bill.

How to bring it down

Calcium hardness does not come down on its own. Your options:

Partial drain and refill. The only reliable method. Replace a percentage of the water with lower-calcium water. If your pool is 600 ppm and your fill water is 200 ppm, replacing about half gets you near 400 ppm.

Reverse osmosis mobile treatment. Some markets have services that filter your existing water and return it, removing calcium, CYA and TDS without dumping the pool. Costs more than draining, saves the water.

Sequestering agents. These do not remove calcium. They hold it in solution so it does not deposit as scale. Useful as a stopgap or when draining is not practical, but they need redosing regularly.

Stop the input. Switch from cal-hypo to liquid chlorine, which adds no calcium at all. This alone stabilizes many pools.

Keeping pH at 7.4 to 7.6 and alkalinity at 80 to 120 ppm also holds off scaling at a given calcium level, since scale forms when the overall balance tips saturated, not from calcium alone.

Draining is where Keys pools need extra care. Our water table is high, and an empty pool shell can float, shift or crack from hydrostatic pressure. That is why full drains here should be done deliberately and often are not the right call at all. Partial drains done in stages are usually the safer path, and if a full drain is genuinely needed, the hydrostatic relief valve needs to be handled properly by someone who has done it on this island before.

Test calcium hardness monthly and watch the trend, because it only moves one direction on its own and the fix gets more disruptive the longer you wait.
