The dense tourist core gives way to canal homes, stilt houses, quiet neighborhoods and a mix of full-time residents and vacation rentals spread across Shark Key, Big Coppitt, Geiger Key, Sugarloaf, Cudjoe, Summerland and Ramrod. The water table, the salt exposure and the wide-open sky are the same brutal combination they are down in the city, but the properties are more spread out and often left unattended for stretches while owners are away.

Custom pools, lazy rivers and equipment that means business

Some of the most ambitious pools in Monroe County are built up this way, and they are some of our favorite accounts. Up on Key Haven, we were brought in to consult and program the automation for a build most people only see in magazines: a grotto pool carved into Keys limestone, a ground-level lazy river, and an equipment room with more valves, filters and manifolds than a lot of commercial buildings. A pool like that lives or dies on its controls and its equipment room, and dialing in that much machinery in salt air is exactly the kind of work we do.

Honestly, we like the drive. After a morning of circling Key West at thirty miles an hour, heading up US 1 toward Sugarloaf with the windows down, stopping for a slice at Bubbalu's or a coffee at Baby's Coffee, is one of the better commutes in the business. The Lower Keys move at a different pace, and the pools out here reward a company that is genuinely glad to make the trip.
