Is Liquid Chlorine Better Than Chlorine Tablets?

Neither one is better in every situation. They are different delivery systems for the same sanitizer, and each carries a side effect you have to manage. Liquid chlorine adds no stabilizer but degrades on the shelf. Tablets are easy and steady but add cyanuric acid to your water with every single one. In a pool that sees sun 365 days a year, that difference decides the argument for most owners.

What each one actually adds to your water

Liquid chlorine is sodium hypochlorite, usually 10 to 12.5 percent. It dissolves instantly, adds no cyanuric acid, and nudges pH upward slightly. That pH rise is smaller than most people expect, because as the chlorine is consumed the effect largely reverses.

Trichlor tablets are about 90 percent available chlorine and roughly 54 percent cyanuric acid by weight. Every 10 ppm of free chlorine they deliver brings about 6 ppm of CYA with it. They are also strongly acidic, with a pH near 3, so they push pH and total alkalinity down over time.

Cal-hypo is a third option. It adds no CYA but does add calcium hardness, which matters in areas with already hard fill water.

The cyanuric acid problem in year-round sun

CYA does not evaporate, break down or get consumed. It only leaves when water leaves. A pool run on tablets alone through a Florida year will climb steadily, and once CYA passes about 80 to 100 ppm, a growing share of your free chlorine is chemically bound and unable to sanitize.

The symptom is familiar. Your test shows 3 ppm free chlorine, the water still looks dull, and algae keeps returning. Owners then add more tablets, which adds more CYA. Lowering it later requires replacing water, which is not trivial here.

Target CYA is roughly 30 to 50 ppm for a traditional chlorine pool, and about 60 to 80 ppm for a salt pool, where the cell benefits from a bit more protection.

Where liquid chlorine falls short

Liquid chlorine is perishable. It loses strength with heat, light and time, and in a hot garage or a truck bed it can drop several percentage points in a matter of weeks. Buy it fresh, buy what you will use in two or three weeks, and store it somewhere cool and dark, upright and sealed.

It also needs to be added regularly, usually every two or three days, because there is no slow-release element. If you travel or keep a seasonal property, a tablet feeder covers the gap in a way liquid cannot.

The balanced routine most pools should run

Use liquid chlorine as your everyday sanitizer, added in the evening so it has all night before UV hits it. Use tablets deliberately: while you are away, during heavy debris periods, or when CYA is measurably below 30 and you want to bring it up. Once CYA reaches the target, pull the tablets and go back to liquid.

Never put tablets in a skimmer basket. The acidic water sitting in the skimmer and lines when the pump is off corrodes equipment, and a heater or a chlorinator downstream will pay the price. Use a proper offline feeder or a floater.

What this means in the Florida Keys

Keys pools face the hardest version of this. UV is intense year-round, water temperatures stay warm enough to sustain algae growth in winter, and chlorine demand never really pauses. That combination pushes people toward tablets because they are convenient, and tablets push CYA up faster than almost anywhere on the mainland.

Fill water is also a factor. Replacing pool water on the island chain is expensive, and full draining carries real risk because of the shallow water table and porous limestone underneath. Avoiding a high CYA problem is far cheaper here than fixing one.

The practical takeaway: test cyanuric acid every few months, and let that number, not convenience, decide how many tablets you use.
