How Much Chlorine Should I Add to My Pool?

Keep free chlorine between 2 and 4 ppm. To raise chlorine by 1 ppm in 10,000 gallons, add about 10 fluid ounces of 12.5 percent liquid chlorine, or about 2 ounces of 73 percent calcium hypochlorite granules. Always test first, then dose to close the gap.

Keep free chlorine between 2 and 4 ppm in a residential pool. The amount you add depends on how far below target you are, how many gallons you have, and which chlorine product you use.

Never dose by habit. Test first, calculate the gap, then add. Guessing is how pools end up either unsanitized or so hot nobody can swim.

Dosing by product, per 10,000 gallons, to raise 1 ppm

  • Liquid chlorine, 12.5 percent sodium hypochlorite: about 10 fluid ounces
  • Liquid chlorine, 10 percent: about 13 fluid ounces
  • Cal-hypo granules, 73 percent: about 2 ounces by weight
  • Dichlor, 56 percent: about 2.4 ounces by weight
  • Trichlor, 90 percent: about 1.5 ounces by weight

So if you have a 15,000 gallon pool testing 1 ppm and want 3 ppm, that is a 2 ppm gap on 1.5 times the base volume: roughly 30 fluid ounces of 12.5 percent liquid chlorine.

What each product does to the rest of your water

This is the part that gets skipped, and it is why two owners using the same amount of chlorine end up with wildly different water.

  • Liquid chlorine adds no CYA and no calcium. It raises pH slightly. It is the cleanest choice for routine dosing, but it loses strength on the shelf, so buy fresh.
  • Cal-hypo adds calcium hardness. Fine in a soft-water pool, a problem in a pool already high on calcium.
  • Trichlor tablets add cyanuric acid and are strongly acidic, so they push pH and alkalinity down over time.
  • Dichlor also adds cyanuric acid and is roughly pH neutral.

If you run tablets year-round, expect CYA to climb and alkalinity to fall. Both need watching.

Shocking is a different calculation

Shock means raising free chlorine high enough to break down combined chloramines, which is generally about 10 times your combined chlorine reading.

A common practical shock dose is 10 ppm of free chlorine, which is roughly 1 gallon of 12.5 percent liquid chlorine per 10,000 gallons, or about 1 pound of 73 percent cal-hypo per 10,000 gallons.

Shock at dusk or after dark so UV does not destroy it before it works, run the pump overnight, and keep swimmers out until free chlorine drops back under 4 ppm.

How much you need depends on CYA

Your stabilizer level changes how much chlorine you actually need to hold. A useful field rule is a minimum free chlorine of about 7.5 percent of your CYA:

  • CYA 30 ppm, hold 2 to 3 ppm free chlorine
  • CYA 50 ppm, hold around 4 ppm
  • CYA 80 ppm, you need closer to 6 ppm for the same result

pH matters too. At pH 8.0, chlorine is far less effective than at 7.5, so correct pH before you conclude you need more chlorine.

Chlorine demand in the Florida Keys

Key West sits under strong UV essentially year round, and pool water here often runs in the mid-80s or warmer for months at a stretch. Warm water plus hard sun plus a longer swim season than almost anywhere in the country means Keys pools burn through chlorine at a rate that would look alarming to a homeowner up north.

Vacation rentals feel it hardest. A house that turns over every few days can go from light use to a full pool of people with no warning, and bather load is the single biggest short-term driver of chlorine demand. During storm season, heavy rain and blown-in organic debris create sudden demand spikes that will flatten a normal chlorine level overnight.

Test before every addition, because the right dose is always the one that closes the gap between where your water actually is and where it needs to be.
