Why Is There Air in My Pool Pump?

Short answer

Air in the pump basket comes from somewhere between the pool and the pump impeller, since everything downstream is under pressure and would leak water instead. The usual causes are a low pool water level, a worn pump lid O-ring, a clogged basket, or a leaking suction side fitting or valve.

Air in the pump basket always comes from the suction side, meaning somewhere between the pool and the pump impeller. That is a useful fact, because everything past the impeller is under positive pressure and would push water out rather than pull air in. It cuts the search area in half immediately.

The most common causes, in rough order of frequency, are a low pool water level, a worn pump lid O-ring, a clogged skimmer or pump basket, and a leaking fitting or valve on the suction plumbing.

Step one: rule out the easy causes

  1. Check the pool water level. It should reach at least the middle of the skimmer opening. Below that, the skimmer intermittently gulps air, which is by far the most common cause and costs nothing to fix.
  2. Shut off the breaker and clear the skimmer basket.
  3. Clear the pump basket. A restricted basket makes the pump pull hard enough to draw air past seals that would otherwise hold.
  4. Check that suction valves are fully open and that a floating weir or diverter in the skimmer is not jammed.

Always shut off power at the breaker before opening the pump lid. Pool pumps are typically 240 volt, and the timer being off is not the same as the circuit being dead.

Step two: the pump lid and its O-ring

If the easy causes check out, the lid O-ring is the next suspect and it is the leading mechanical cause. Remove it and inspect for flattening, cracking, a chalky surface or stretching. Any of those means replace it.

Clean the groove and the sealing face on the lid. A single grain of sand or a bit of leaf debris holds the seal open just enough to pull air. Lubricate with a silicone based pool lubricant, never petroleum jelly, which breaks down rubber.

Seat the lid square and hand tight, since cranking it down hard distorts the seal rather than improving it. Check the pump pot drain plugs too, because they have their own small O-rings and leak air surprisingly often after a repair.

Step three: hunting a plumbing leak

If air persists, work along the suction plumbing.

  • Threaded fittings where pipe enters the pump, particularly if sealed with tape instead of a proper sealant
  • Valve stems on multiport or three way diverter valves, where the stem O-ring dries out
  • Unions ahead of the pump
  • Glue joints, especially any that were repaired
  • The skimmer throat itself, if it has separated from the plumbing

A reliable field test: with the pump running, pour water slowly over a suspect joint and watch for the air pattern in the basket to change.

Air on the return side is a different problem

Bubbles coming out of the pool returns with a clear pump basket usually means air trapped in the filter that needs to be bled off at the air relief valve, or a return line issue. Bubbles in the basket and bubbles at the returns together confirm a suction leak feeding air right through the system.

Why we chase this often in the Keys

Two local factors make air leaks a frequent call here. Heavy rain and storm debris pack skimmer baskets fast, and a single afternoon of wind can restrict a line enough to start pulling air.

The larger factor is airborne salt, which reaches equipment pads across the entire island including at freshwater pools. It hardens rubber and degrades plastics faster than inland air does, so lid O-rings, valve stem seals and drain plug gaskets simply do not last as long here. Equipment lifespans across the pad run shorter in the Keys generally, and the seals are the first thing to show it.

Pads at low elevation in flood zones have an extra concern. Standing water during a surge event pushes grit into fittings and leaves debris in joints that later becomes an air path.

Start with the water level, then the pump lid O-ring, because between them they explain most of the air you will ever find in a pump basket.
