Why Is My Pool Pump Not Priming?

Short answer

A pump that will not prime is pulling air instead of water, usually from a low pool water level, a clogged skimmer or pump basket, a worn pump lid O-ring, or a leak on the suction side plumbing. Check water level and baskets first, then the lid seal, before suspecting the pump itself.

If your pump runs but never fills with water, it is pulling air somewhere on the suction side instead of drawing water from the pool. Priming failures are almost always a leak, a blockage or a water level problem, not a dead motor. The motor spinning without moving water tells you the pump is alive and the problem is upstream of it.

Work through the checks in order below. The cheap causes are also the most common ones.

Step one: water level and baskets

  1. Check the pool water level. It should sit at least halfway up the skimmer opening. If the water drops below the skimmer mouth, the skimmer gulps air continuously and the pump can never hold prime.
  2. Shut off power at the breaker, then open the skimmer basket and clear it. A basket packed with leaves starves the line.
  3. Open the pump lid and clear the pump basket the same way. Look for a small leaf or a pebble sitting in the throat behind the basket.
  4. Refill the pump housing with water from a hose before restarting. A pump that has run dry will not always self prime from empty.

Never open the pump lid while the system is pressurized or the breaker is on. Shut the breaker off at the panel first.

Step two: the pump lid and O-ring

The lid O-ring is the single most common air leak on any pool system. Pull it out and inspect it. If it is flattened, cracked, chalky or stretched so it no longer seats cleanly in its groove, replace it. They are inexpensive and they fail on a predictable schedule.

Clean the sealing surface on the pot and the lid, since grit under the O-ring holds it open just enough to break prime. Apply a thin coat of silicone based lubricant, never petroleum jelly, which degrades the rubber. Seat the lid square and hand tight, because overtightening distorts the seal as often as undertightening leaves it loose.

Step three: finding a suction side air leak

If the pump primes but loses prime, or the basket holds a swirling pocket of air that never clears, you have a leak between the pool and the pump impeller. Common locations:

  • Pump lid O-ring, covered above
  • Drain plugs on the pump pot, which need their own O-rings
  • The threaded fitting where suction plumbing enters the pump, especially if it was sealed with thread tape rather than proper sealant
  • Valve stems on multiport or diverter valves
  • Cracked pipe or a failed glue joint under the pad

A simple field test: with the pump running, pour a little water over each suspect joint. If the pump surges or the air pocket briefly changes, that joint is drawing air.

When it is actually the pump

If you have eliminated water level, blockages and every seal, look at the pump itself. A worn impeller, a failed shaft seal or a cracked volute will all prevent prime, as will an impeller clogged with hair and debris.

A pump that is 8 to 12 years old and struggling to prime is frequently at the end of its service life rather than one part away from working. At that point a replacement, which in Florida means a variable speed model on most swaps, is usually the better spend.

Priming problems in the Florida Keys

Two things make this a more frequent call here. First, hard rain and storm surge push debris into skimmers fast, and a single afternoon can pack a basket solid. Second, airborne salt reaches equipment across the entire island, including at freshwater pools, and it hardens plastics and rubber faster than inland air does. Lid O-rings and valve seals that might last several years elsewhere often give up sooner in the Keys.

If your pool sits in a flood zone with the pad at low elevation, also check that a recent high water event has not pushed sand or grit into the suction line.

Start with the water level and the pump lid O-ring, because those two account for the large majority of priming failures and both are fixable in a few minutes.
