Why Does My Salt Level Keep Dropping?

Short answer

Salt is not consumed when the cell makes chlorine, so a falling salt level means salt is physically leaving with water. The usual causes are splash-out, backwashing, filter cleaning, rain overflow, draining, or an undetected leak, plus false low readings from a scaled or aging cell.

Salt does not get used up. The generator converts chloride into chlorine, the chlorine sanitizes, and then it reverts to chloride, so the same salt cycles indefinitely. Evaporation does not remove it either, because only pure water leaves as vapor while the salt stays behind.

That means a genuinely falling salt level has exactly one physical explanation: water carrying salt is leaving the pool and being replaced with fresh water.

Where the water is going

Splash-out. Kids, cannonballs, dogs and heavy swimming move real volume over the edge. A busy pool loses more this way than owners expect.

Backwashing. Every backwash on a sand or DE filter dumps a few hundred gallons of salted water to waste. Backwash weekly for a season and salinity noticeably drops.

Filter cleaning and equipment work. Draining the filter, opening the pump, replacing a heater or repairing plumbing all send salted water out.

Rain overflow. A heavy storm raises the level past the tile line and the excess runs out the overflow or over the coping, taking salt with it. Then the incoming rain is fresh, so you get diluted twice in one event.

Partial draining. Lowering the pool for storm prep, tile cleaning or to reduce stabilizer removes salt in direct proportion.

Leaks. If you cannot account for the loss, suspect a leak in the plumbing, shell, light conduit or around fittings. A pool losing more than roughly a quarter inch per day beyond normal evaporation deserves a leak investigation.

Rule out a false reading first

Before adding a single bag, confirm the number independently. Your control panel infers salinity from cell conductivity, and that estimate drifts badly as the cell scales up or as its coating wears. A scaled cell reporting low salt while the water is actually at 3100 ppm is one of the most common false alarms in salt pool ownership.

Test with strips, a titration kit or a handheld digital meter. Take the sample elbow deep away from the returns. If the independent test disagrees with the panel, pull and inspect the cell rather than buying salt.

If the plates show white calcium scale, clean them in a 4 to 1 water to muriatic acid solution for 10 to 15 minutes. Always add acid to water, wear splash goggles and gloves, work outdoors, and never mix acid with chlorine or shock.

Adding salt back correctly

Most residential systems target 2700 to 3400 ppm. Confirm your unit’s spec. Roughly 42 pounds of pool salt raises 10,000 gallons by about 500 ppm.

Turn the generator off, run the pump on high, pour the salt slowly across the shallow end floor, brush it toward the drain, and let it circulate 24 hours before retesting and restarting the cell. Never pour salt into the skimmer. Round down and top off later, because removing excess salt means draining water.

What low salt does to the system

Running below the target range makes the cell strain to pull chloride from the water. Output falls, the pool struggles to hold chlorine, and the plates degrade faster, which shortens the cell’s normal three to seven year life. It is not a condition to leave alone for a month.

And since a salt pool is a chlorine pool, low salt eventually shows up the way any chlorine shortage does, with dull water, algae getting a foothold and a persistent chlorine demand you cannot chase down.

Why Keys pools drift more

Our rain events are dramatic. A single afternoon storm can put enough water in a pool to push it over the coping, and hurricane season delivers that repeatedly, so salinity here can slide several hundred ppm across a wet stretch.

At the other end of the year, relentless heat drives evaporation and constant top-offs with fresh water. The salt stays put during evaporation, but every overflow, backwash and storm-prep drawdown gets replaced with unsalted municipal water.

Because our pools run year round with no shutdown, monthly salinity checks make sense on this island rather than seasonal ones.

If the salt keeps falling and you cannot point to splash, backwash, overflow or draining, stop adding salt and start looking for a leak.
