How Does a Saltwater Pool Actually Work?

Short answer

A saltwater pool dissolves salt in the water and passes it through a salt cell, where electrolysis splits the salt into chlorine that sanitizes the pool. The chlorine reverts to salt after it works, so the cycle repeats continuously rather than requiring you to add chlorine by hand.

A saltwater pool is a chlorine pool that makes its own chlorine on site. You dissolve salt into the water, the pump pushes that salty water through a device called a salt cell, and a low voltage electrical current splits the salt molecules apart to produce chlorine right in the plumbing.

The chlorine sanitizes the pool exactly the way chlorine from a bucket or a tablet would. Once it has done its job it recombines back into salt, so the same salt keeps cycling through the system over and over.

The electrolysis part

Salt is sodium chloride. When it dissolves, it separates into sodium ions and chloride ions floating freely in the water.

The salt cell sits inline on the return plumbing after the filter and heater. Inside are a set of coated titanium plates. The control board sends DC current across those plates, and as salty water flows between them the current pulls chloride ions out of solution and converts them to hypochlorous acid, which is the same active sanitizer produced when liquid chlorine or a tablet dissolves.

That is the entire trick. There is no exotic chemistry and no chlorine-free operation. The generator is simply a small chlorine factory bolted to your equipment pad.

The numbers the system needs

Salt generators are fussy about a few readings, and every one of them has to be right for the cell to output properly.

  • Salt level: most residential systems want 2700 to 3400 ppm. Check the manufacturer plate on your unit, because targets differ by brand and some older cells want the high end of that band.
  • Water temperature: below roughly 60 degrees most cells reduce or stop output to protect themselves. Not a concern here, but worth knowing.
  • Stabilizer (cyanuric acid): 60 to 80 ppm is typical for a salt pool, higher than a traditional pool, because generated chlorine is produced in small continuous doses and burns off fast without protection.
  • pH: salt systems naturally push pH upward as a byproduct of electrolysis, so expect to add acid more often than a tablet-fed pool.

For reference, 3200 ppm is about a tenth the salinity of seawater. Most people cannot taste it and it does not sting eyes.

What you still have to do

A salt system automates chlorine dosing. It does not automate pool care.

You still test the water, still brush, still clean baskets and the filter, and still shock the pool after heavy use, heavy rain or an algae bloom. Most units have a boost or superchlorinate mode, but a badly fouled pool almost always clears faster with a bag or jug of shock than by asking the cell to work overtime.

You also still balance calcium hardness and alkalinity. Salt does nothing to help those.

Where saltwater pools go wrong

The two failure points are the cell and the salt level.

Cells scale up with calcium deposits, which insulate the plates and cut output. If your unit reports low salt while a lab test says salt is fine, scale is the usual culprit. Cells also simply wear out, because the coating on the plates is consumed over time. Three to seven years is a normal service life.

Salt level drops from splash-out, backwashing, draining and rain overflow. It does not drop from the chlorine cycle itself.

Running salt systems in the Florida Keys

Our pools never get an off-season. A salt cell here runs essentially year round, which means it accumulates operating hours far faster than the same unit would in a climate with a four-month winter shutdown.

High UV is the other pressure. Sunlight destroys free chlorine quickly, so Keys pools lean on the generator harder and often need longer daily run times or a higher output percentage than the manufacturer’s default. And because our fill water tends to be hard, cells here scale up sooner, so plan on inspecting the cell more often than the manual suggests.
