How Long Does a Salt Cell Last?

Operating hours. A cell running at 80 percent output for ten hours a day ages roughly twice as fast as one running at 40 percent for the same period. Output percentage and pump run time are the two dials that determine service life.
Undersizing. If the cell is rated for 20,000 gallons and it is on a 25,000 gallon pool, it has to run near maximum constantly to keep up. Buying a cell rated above your pool volume is one of the best value decisions in salt pool ownership, because the same cell then loafs at a lower output and lasts noticeably longer.
Water chemistry. High calcium hardness, high pH and high alkalinity drive scale onto the plates. Scale insulates the coating, forces the unit to work harder for less output, and adds acid cleanings, each of which removes a little coating.
Over-cleaning. Every acid soak costs you some coating. Cleaning a cell that is not scaled is pure loss.
Running with low salt. Below the manufacturer target the cell strains to pull enough chloride from the water, which accelerates plate degradation. Keep salinity in the 2700 to 3400 ppm range your unit specifies.
Signs the cell is at the end

How to get the most life out of one
Balance the water first and consistently. Keep pH 7.4 to 7.6, alkalinity 80 to 120 ppm and calcium hardness in a reasonable range for your surface. That single habit prevents most scaling.
Keep stabilizer at 60 to 80 ppm. Adequate cyanuric acid protects the chlorine your cell produces, which means you can run a lower output percentage for the same result.
Run the cell at the lowest output that holds 2 to 4 ppm free chlorine, and adjust seasonally rather than setting it once and forgetting it.
Inspect quarterly, clean only when you see scale, and when you do clean, use a 4 to 1 water to acid solution for no more than 10 to 15 minutes. Always add acid to water, wear goggles and gloves, work outdoors, and never mix acid with chlorine products.
Also remember what the cell is not doing. It is not making the pool chlorine free. A salt pool is sanitized by chlorine, just generated on site, so every chlorine rule about balance and shocking still applies.
