Expect the number to move with the weather
Demand is not constant. Heat, strong sun, heavy rain and bather load all consume chlorine faster, so the setting that held perfectly in March may not hold in July. A pool that sits at 40 percent in cooler months might need 60 or 70 percent at peak summer, then come back down.
A pool party, a stretch of storms or a long hot spell are all reasons to bump output temporarily and then return to baseline. Adjusting seasonally is normal. Adjusting daily usually means something else is off.
When 100 percent is a warning sign, not a solution
If your cell is pinned at 100 percent and the pool still will not hold chlorine, stop turning the dial and start diagnosing. The common causes are:
- Salt level below the manufacturer’s range, so the cell cannot generate at rated output.
- A scaled cell. Calcium buildup on the plates chokes production. Inspect it and clean per the manual.
- An aging cell. These are consumables and output falls off near end of life.
- High cyanuric acid, which makes existing chlorine sluggish and gives the false impression of low output.
- An undersized cell for the pool volume, which no setting will fix.
A cell running flat out constantly also wears out faster, so chasing the problem with the percentage dial costs you money twice.
