What every degree actually costs

Heating is not linear in the way people expect. The warmer you push the water above the surrounding air temperature, the faster the pool sheds that heat back to the environment. Each additional degree therefore costs more than the one before it, because you are fighting a bigger gap.

Evaporation is the main culprit. It accounts for the majority of heat loss from an uncovered pool, and it accelerates with wind, dry air and a wider temperature difference between water and air. This is why the single most effective heating upgrade is not a bigger heater. It is a cover.

Above 90F, warm becomes a problem

Water above roughly 90F stops being pleasant for general swimming and starts creating real issues.

Your body cannot dump excess heat into water that is close to your own temperature, so overheating, dizziness and dehydration become genuine risks. That risk is higher for pregnant swimmers, people with cardiovascular conditions, older adults and anyone drinking alcohol poolside. Very warm water is also simply tiring rather than refreshing.

The chemistry suffers too. Warm water accelerates chlorine loss and gives algae the conditions it wants. A pool held at 88F will burn noticeably more sanitizer than the same pool at 80F, and it will turn green faster if you fall behind on it. Warm pools need more attention, not less.

Getting an accurate reading

Surface water is not pool water. Sun on a still surface can read several degrees above the actual body of the pool. Take your reading with the pump running, at roughly elbow depth, away from returns and away from direct sun. A cheap floating thermometer is fine as long as you use it consistently in the same spot.

If you have a heat pump or gas heater with a digital display, remember that it reads water passing through the unit, which is accurate only while the system is circulating.
