How Much Does It Cost to Heat a Pool?

Pool heating cost comes down to three things: what type of heater you have, how far above ambient you are trying to hold the water, and whether you use a cover. Heat pumps are by far the cheapest to run in a climate like Florida. Gas heaters cost several times more per hour but heat much faster. Solar costs essentially nothing to run once installed.

Anyone who quotes you a single flat number for pool heating is guessing. The variables swamp the average.

What drives the number

Temperature difference. Holding water at 82F when the air is 78F is cheap. Holding 82F when nights drop to 62F is expensive. Cost scales with the gap you are fighting, not with the target itself.

Pool size and surface area. Heat leaves through the surface, so a wide shallow pool loses more than a compact deep one of the same volume.

Wind and exposure. Wind strips heat off open water fast. A sheltered pool holds temperature noticeably better than one on an open, breezy lot.

Cover use. This is the big one and the one most owners skip.

Heat pump versus gas running costs

A heat pump does not create heat, it moves it. It pulls warmth out of the outside air and transfers it into the water, which is why it delivers several units of heat energy for each unit of electricity it consumes. That efficiency is what makes it cheap to run.

The trade-off is speed and its dependence on air temperature. Heat pumps work efficiently when ambient air is above roughly 50F, and their output falls off as the air gets colder. In the Keys that limitation almost never bites.

A gas heater burns propane or natural gas to produce heat directly. It works regardless of outside air temperature and raises water temperature far faster, but every hour of run time costs meaningfully more than the equivalent hour on a heat pump. Gas makes sense when you need a pool warm on demand for a weekend rather than held warm continuously.

Solar sits apart. Installation is the cost, and after that you pay only for pump time to push water through the panels. The catch is that you get what the sun gives you.

Where the money actually leaks

Most heating dollars do not go into the water. They evaporate off the surface. Evaporation is the dominant heat loss mechanism for an uncovered outdoor pool, and it runs hardest overnight when the air is cooler and drier than the water.

A pool cover is the single biggest heat retention measure available and it cuts evaporative loss dramatically. Nothing else you can buy changes the running cost by as much for as little money.

Other practical savings:

• Drop your target a degree or two. Every degree above ambient costs more than the last.
• Do not heat a pool nobody is swimming in. Let it drift during travel weeks.
• Keep the heater serviced. Scaled heat exchangers and dirty coils cost efficiency quietly.
• Fix a failing pump or clogged filter. Poor flow makes any heater work harder.

The chemical cost people forget

Warm water raises chlorine demand. Higher temperatures accelerate chlorine loss and speed algae growth, so a heated pool needs more sanitizer than the same pool run cold. Budget for that alongside the energy. It catches people who heat aggressively and then wonder why the water went cloudy.

What this looks like in Key West

Down here the heating season is short and the cooling problem is longer. Many Keys pools sit in the upper 80s all summer with no heater running, so for a lot of local owners heating costs nothing for months at a time.

The bills show up in winter, when a cold front can pull water into the low 70s. Heat pumps suit this climate because air temperature almost never falls below their efficient operating range and it does not freeze here. The offsetting local reality is salt air, which shortens heater lifespan. Replacement cost arrives sooner in the Keys than the rated life suggests, and it belongs in your long-term math.
