What rain washes in

  6. Restore free chlorine to 2 to 4 ppm, or shock if the pool held zero chlorine for any length of time.
  7. Brush the walls and floor.
  8. Run the pump continuously until the water is clear.

Check the filter pressure through this. A storm cleanup loads a filter quickly, and when the gauge reads 8 to 10 psi over the clean baseline it needs service before it can do any more good.

Getting ahead of the next one

Before a forecast heavy rain, raise free chlorine toward the upper end of your range so the dilution leaves you with a working level rather than nothing. Make sure cyanuric acid is in the 30 to 50 ppm range, since a pool starting at 20 ppm will end up with almost no UV protection afterward.

Trim overhanging vegetation, clear deck drains and make sure runoff from landscaping is directed away from the pool rather than into it. Grading is often the single biggest factor in how bad a pool looks after a storm.
