Why Is My Pool Water Cloudy?

Short answer

Pool water turns cloudy when suspended particles are not being removed faster than they enter. The three causes are poor filtration (dirty or undersized filter, too few run hours), out of balance chemistry (low chlorine, high pH or high calcium hardness), or heavy bather and debris load.

Cloudy water means microscopic particles are suspended in your pool faster than your system can remove them. In practice the cause is almost always one of three things: the filter is not doing its job, the chemistry is off, or the water is simply not moving enough hours a day. Work through them in that order and most pools clear in 24 to 72 hours.

Start with chlorine, because it decides everything else

If free chlorine is low, everything else you do is wasted effort. Test it first. On a stabilized outdoor pool you want free chlorine held around 2 to 4 ppm, and it should be at least 7.5 percent of your cyanuric acid level.

A cloudy pool with zero or near-zero chlorine is usually the earliest stage of an algae bloom, before it turns green. That water needs to be shocked, not clarified.

Also check combined chlorine (total minus free). Anything above 0.5 ppm means you have chloramines, and those both cloud water and produce the strong chemical smell people mistake for “too much chlorine.”

Then check pH, alkalinity and calcium

High pH is the single most common chemistry cause of cloudy water. Above about 7.8, dissolved calcium starts falling out of solution as fine white particles, and chlorine loses much of its killing power at the same time.

Target ranges to hold:

  • pH: 7.2 to 7.8, ideally near 7.4 to 7.6
  • Total alkalinity: 80 to 120 ppm
  • Calcium hardness: 200 to 400 ppm for plaster, lower end is fine for vinyl and fiberglass
  • Cyanuric acid: 30 to 50 ppm outdoors

If pH and calcium are both high, you are looking at calcium scale forming in the water column. Bring pH down first, slowly, and retest the next day.

Filtration is where most cloudy pools actually fail

A filter that is due for service will not pull out particles small enough to cause haze. The rule to watch is filter pressure: when the gauge reads 8 to 10 psi above the clean starting pressure, it is time to backwash a sand or DE filter or clean the cartridges.

Note the clean pressure after every service and write it on the filter housing with a marker. Without that baseline number the gauge tells you nothing.

Sand media itself wears out. Sand loses its sharp edges and its ability to trap fine particles after roughly five to seven years, and no amount of backwashing brings that back.

Run the pump longer than you think you need to

Water only gets filtered when it is moving. Most residential pools need enough run time for at least one full turnover per day, and while clearing a cloudy pool you want two.

For a cloudy pool, run the pump continuously for 24 to 48 hours, brushing the walls and floor once a day so settled particles get lifted back into circulation where the filter can catch them. If you have a variable speed pump, run it at a moderate speed rather than the lowest, because clearing haze needs turnover more than it needs quiet.

Key West conditions push pools toward cloudiness harder than most places.
