Why Is My Pool Cloudy After Shocking It?

Cloudiness after shocking is usually normal. The shock oxidizes organic contaminants, leaving dead particulate suspended until the filter removes it, and it clears in 24 to 48 hours of continuous filtration. Persistent cloudiness means high pH or calcium precipitation from cal-hypo shock.

In most cases this is exactly what should happen. Shocking kills algae and oxidizes organic contaminants, and the resulting dead material stays suspended in the water until your filter pulls it out. Give it 24 to 48 hours of continuous filtration and it clears. If it is still cloudy after that, the problem is chemistry, not the shock.

The normal version: dead material in suspension

When free chlorine spikes, it destroys bacteria, early algae, sunscreen, body oils and organic debris all at once. None of that disappears. It becomes fine particulate small enough to hang in the water column and scatter light.

You will often see this as a slightly milky or gray cast rather than true green or brown. That is a good sign. It means the shock worked and the filter now has work to do.

Brush the walls and floor once during this period. Particles that have settled into corners will not be filtered until you lift them back into the water.

The abnormal version: high pH after shocking

Cal-hypo shock (calcium hypochlorite) raises pH as it dissolves. If your pool was already sitting near the top of the range, shocking can push it past 8.0, and at that point dissolved calcium starts precipitating out as fine white particles. That is a cloud that will not filter out until you correct the pH.

Test pH the morning after shocking. Bring it back into the 7.2 to 7.6 window and hold total alkalinity at 80 to 120 ppm so it stays there.

If your calcium hardness is already above roughly 400 ppm, cal-hypo is the wrong shock for your pool. Switch to a liquid chlorine (sodium hypochlorite) shock, which adds no calcium.

Test the water before you shock again

The single most common mistake is shocking a second time because the pool looks worse. If free chlorine is still elevated from the first dose, more shock adds nothing but calcium or stabilizer.

Wait until free chlorine drops back under about 5 ppm before considering another dose, and confirm the water is actually still holding chlorine overnight. A pool that loses most of its chlorine between dusk and dawn still has a live organic demand, and that one does need retreating.

Also check combined chlorine. If it is above 0.5 ppm, the shock did not reach breakpoint and the job is genuinely unfinished.

Filter and run time do the actual clearing

Shocking is chemistry. Clearing is mechanical.

  • Run the pump continuously until the water is clear, not on a timer schedule
  • Watch filter pressure and clean at 8 to 10 psi above the clean baseline
  • Expect to clean the filter more than once during a heavy clear-up
  • Do not add clarifier for the first 12 hours, since very high chlorine can break down some clarifier polymers

Shocking pools in Key West

Timing matters more here than almost anywhere. UV in the Keys is intense enough that a daytime shock can lose a substantial part of its strength before it finishes working, so shock after sundown and let it run overnight. Rental properties are the other local wrinkle. A pool that just handled a full house for a week has a large organic load from sunscreen, sand and body oils, and that pool will cloud noticeably after shocking simply because there was more to oxidize. Plan the shock for the start of a turnover gap, not the night before guests arrive. When to call someone

If the pool is still cloudy 72 hours after shocking with pH corrected and the pump running nonstop, something mechanical is wrong. Worn sand media, torn DE grids, a cracked cartridge or a filter valve letting water bypass will all keep a pool hazy no matter what you pour in.
