Pour it into the shallow end, brush it toward the drain, run the pump 24 hours with the generator off, then start the unit once salinity is even.

Size the cell above your pool
The single most valuable decision in a conversion is buying a cell rated larger than your pool. A unit rated for 40,000 gallons on a 20,000 gallon pool runs at a low output percentage, keeps up easily during heat waves and heavy use, and lasts substantially longer than a right-sized cell running near maximum every day.
Cells are consumables with a typical life of three to seven years. Oversizing is how you push toward the top of that range.
What to check before you commit
Heater. Older heaters with copper heat exchangers do not love salt. Newer cupro-nickel exchangers handle it fine. Check what you have.
Metal fixtures. Ladders, rails, light rings and any galvanized or low grade metal near the waterline should be inspected and, where practical, upgraded or protected.
Coping and decking. Untreated limestone, unsealed natural stone and some flagstone will spall and degrade with repeated salt splash. Sealing helps. Concrete, pavers and tile are generally fine.
Sacrificial anode. Adding a zinc anode at the pad or in the skimmer is inexpensive insurance. It corrodes preferentially so your metal parts do not.
Surface. Plaster, pebble, quartz, fiberglass and vinyl all coexist with salt at these concentrations without issue when water is balanced.
Chemistry changes to expect
Salt systems push pH upward continuously as a byproduct of electrolysis, so you will be adding muriatic acid more often than you did with tablets. If you handle acid yourself, always add acid to water, wear goggles and gloves, work outdoors and never mix it with chlorine products.
Stabilizer targets rise too. Salt pools generally want cyanuric acid at 60 to 80 ppm to protect the small continuous chlorine doses from sunlight. If you have been running trichlor tablets, your stabilizer may already be high, and in that case a partial drain before conversion is worth discussing.
Everything else stays the same. You still test, brush, clean baskets, maintain the filter and shock after storms or heavy bather load.
