Why Key West Pools Are Not Like Mainland Pools

Pool advice on the internet is written for Phoenix, Orlando or Dallas. Almost none of it is written for a two-by-four-mile island surrounded by salt water. Here is what actually changes when your pool lives in Key West.

Salt air corrodes everything, even on freshwater pools

You do not need a salt system to have a salt problem here. Airborne salt settles on equipment pads, rails, heaters and screw terminals across the whole island. Equipment that lasts 12 years on the mainland often gives up years earlier without regular inspection. This is why we put eyes on the equipment pad at every single visit; catching corrosion at a terminal is cheap, and replacing a seized motor during peak season is not.

The sun eats chlorine for breakfast

Key West UV is intense nearly year-round, and unstabilized chlorine breaks down in hours under it. Cyanuric acid management matters more here than almost anywhere in the country, and it is a balance: too little and your chlorine vanishes by noon, too much and the chlorine you have stops working. The condition of the water tells you how the balance is being managed.

Our fill water starts different

Keys tap water arrives through one pipe from the mainland, managed by the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority, and it has its own alkalinity profile. If you balance a pool here using mainland assumptions, your numbers drift within weeks. We test against what actually comes out of the tap on this island.

There is no off-season

No freeze means no winterizing, which sounds like good news, and is. But it also means the pool works 52 weeks a year: constant bather load in rental season, constant algae pressure in the warm months, constant chemical demand. A Keys pool that skips a few weeks of care shows it fast.

Storm season is a maintenance calendar, not a news event

From June through November, everything about pool care here happens with one eye on the tropics. Water level, tree trimming near the pool, equipment pad drainage, chemical stock at the house. It becomes routine when it is built into the service, which is exactly where it belongs.
