What Is Included in a Professional Pool Service Visit?

A standard weekly visit covers testing and balancing the water, skimming the surface, brushing walls and steps, netting or vacuuming debris, emptying the skimmer and pump baskets, and a visual inspection of the equipment pad. Nationally that service commonly runs about 100 to 350 dollars a month depending on region, pool size, frequency and whether chemicals are included.

What is not in that list is where costs diverge between companies, so it is worth knowing the standard scope before you compare quotes.

The routine work on every visit

Water testing and balancing. Free chlorine, pH, total alkalinity, and periodically cyanuric acid, calcium hardness and salt on salt pools. Then dosing to bring the water into range. This is the part that protects your surfaces and equipment, and it is the reason the visit exists.

Physical cleaning. Skimming floating debris, brushing walls, steps, the tanning ledge and corners where circulation is weak, and vacuuming the floor when needed.

Baskets and skimmers. Emptying skimmer baskets and the pump strainer basket. A loaded basket starves the pump and costs you flow and electricity.

Equipment check. Looking at filter pressure, listening to the pump, checking for leaks at unions and seals, confirming the cleaner and any automation are working. Catching a problem early here is a large part of the value.

What is usually billed separately

• Filter cartridge deep cleaning or DE grid breakdowns, typically a few times a year
• Salt cell inspection and acid cleaning
• Algae remediation after a bloom, which is a project rather than a visit
• Draining, partial drains and refills
• Any repair labor and parts
• Chemicals, if the plan is not all inclusive
• Stain treatment, acid washing and specialty chemistry

None of that is dishonest to charge for. What matters is whether it was disclosed before you signed.

How to compare quotes honestly

The cheapest monthly rate in any market is frequently the one where chemicals are billed separately and where filter cleans, salt cell cleanings and “routine maintenance” line items appear on later invoices. A 110 dollar plan with add-ons can quietly beat a 175 dollar all inclusive plan on the first bill and cost more over twelve months.

Ask every company to answer these in writing:

• Are all routine chemicals included in the monthly rate?
• How many visits per month, and on which day?
• Is filter cleaning included, and how often is it done?
• Is salt cell cleaning included?
• What work triggers an extra charge, and will I be told before it happens?
• Do I get a record of what was tested and what was added?

Then build a twelve month total for each. That comparison is the only one that reflects what you will actually pay.

What a Keys visit looks like

Service down here runs 52 weeks a year. There is no dormant winter stretch, so the schedule and the cost run through all twelve months rather than tapering off seasonally.

Almost no pool in the Keys has a screen cage, which means every visit deals with a heavier debris load than a screened mainland pool. Palm material, airborne salt dust and iguana traffic are constant, so netting, brushing and basket work take longer and filters load faster.

Salt air also makes the equipment check more important here than inland. Motor housings, fasteners, conduit fittings and light rings corrode faster this close to open water, so a tech who looks at the pad every week is catching things that would otherwise become replacements.

Before you sign anything, get the inclusions list in writing, because a clear scope is the difference between a predictable bill and a surprising one.
