Why salt air destroys pool equipment in the Florida Keys

Short answer

Salt air. The Keys sit in a constant marine aerosol that coats every metal surface with chloride salts, and those salts pull moisture from the air and drive corrosion nonstop. Pool motors, heater cabinets, fasteners and electrical connections that last a decade on the mainland can fail in two or three years here if they are not chosen and mounted for it.

Every pool company on the mainland tells owners their equipment should last ten to fifteen years. In the Florida Keys, that number is often cut in half, and salt air is the reason. Understanding what it does to an equipment pad is the first step to spending less on equipment over the years you own a pool here.

What salt air actually does

The Keys sit in a permanent marine environment. Wind carries a fine aerosol of seawater inland, and it settles as a thin film of chloride salt on every surface, including the metal on your equipment pad. Those salts are hygroscopic, meaning they pull moisture out of the air, so even on a dry day your pump motor and heater sit under a damp, salty skin. That is the perfect recipe for corrosion, and it never stops working. Pool chemistry adds to it from the other side, but salt air is the constant mainland equipment was never designed for.

What fails first

  • Pump motors. The steel shell, shaft and bearings corrode from the outside in. A motor that hums, rusts at the seams or seizes early is usually a salt-air casualty.
  • Heater cabinets and heat exchangers. Sheet-metal cabinets rust through, and salt speeds the internal corrosion that eventually takes a heat exchanger.
  • Fasteners, unions and clamps. Cheap steel hardware rusts solid, turning a five-minute repair into a fight.
  • Electrical connections. Corroded lugs, contactors and grounds cause the intermittent faults that are hardest to chase down.
  • Salt cells. In a saltwater pool the cell already works hard, and the salty air around it does not help.

How to make equipment last

You cannot beat the salt, but you can slow it down:

  • Site the pad thoughtfully. A little shelter from direct spray and rain helps, without trapping heat.
  • Rinse the pad. An occasional freshwater rinse knocks the salt film off before it does its work.
  • Choose materials for the Keys. Stainless and coated hardware, plastic unions, and motors rated for marine conditions outlast the bargain versions many times over.
  • Keep connections tight and sealed. Dielectric grease and proper covers protect the electrical side.
  • Do not ignore surface rust. On a Keys pad, rust is not cosmetic, it is a countdown.

When salt finally wins, the fix is not just bolting on the same part. It is choosing and mounting the replacement so it survives the next few years, which is a different job than a mainland swap.
