Why you should never fully drain a pool in the Florida Keys
Short answer
Almost never, and never on a whim. The Keys water table sits just a few feet down, so an empty pool becomes a boat: groundwater pressure under the shell can lift, crack or float the whole structure out of the ground. When a Keys pool genuinely must be drained, it is done slowly and carefully, sometimes with well points, by someone who has done it here before.
On the mainland, draining a pool to clean, repair or resurface it is routine. In the Florida Keys it is one of the fastest ways to destroy one. The reason is under your feet, and every Keys pool owner should understand it before they ever let someone empty their pool.
Your pool is floating on groundwater
The Keys are a strip of porous limestone barely above sea level, and the water table sits just a few feet below the surface. Your pool is essentially a boat that stays put only because the weight of the water inside it holds it down against the groundwater pushing up.
Empty that pool, and the balance flips. Hydrostatic pressure from the groundwater presses up on the empty shell with tremendous force. A drained Keys pool can crack, heave, lift at one end, or in the worst cases float partly out of the ground. That is not a repair, that is a replacement.
The hydrostatic relief valve
Many Keys pools have a hydrostatic relief valve in the deepest part of the floor. It is designed to let groundwater pressure bleed up into the pool if the shell is ever emptied, relieving some of that lift. It helps, but it is a safety net, not a license to drain. Valves clog, fail, or were never there to begin with, and trusting one blindly is how pools get wrecked.
What to do instead
- Rebalance, do not drain. Almost every “the water is too far gone” situation can be fixed with a heavy treatment and filtration while the water stays in place.
- Partial drains only, when needed. Lowering the level a foot or two for tile or repair work is often fine. Emptying it is a different thing entirely.
- Leave real drains to pros. When a full drain is genuinely required, it is done slowly, watched closely, sometimes with well points pulling the groundwater down first, and never during the wet season if it can wait.
If a pool problem in the Keys sounds like it needs a full drain, get a second opinion first. The drain is usually the most dangerous and least necessary part of the plan.
