How Does Rain Affect Pool Chemistry?
Short answer
Rain dilutes chlorine and cyanuric acid, lowers pH and total alkalinity because rainwater is naturally acidic, and washes organic debris and phosphates in from the deck and yard. After heavy rain, test and rebalance alkalinity first, then pH, then chlorine.
Rain dilutes your sanitizer and stabilizer, pushes pH and alkalinity down, and carries organic material and phosphates into the water from every surface it touches on the way. A light shower barely registers. An inch or more of rain will visibly change your test results.
The practical takeaway is simple. Test after heavy rain rather than assuming your normal weekly dose still applies.
Dilution is the biggest effect
Rain is essentially distilled water with no chlorine, no stabilizer and almost no mineral content in it. Every gallon that falls into the pool dilutes what is already there.
Chlorine is the obvious loss, but cyanuric acid matters just as much. Stabilizer is what shields chlorine from sunlight, and when a series of storms drops your CYA below about 30 ppm, your chlorine starts burning off in hours instead of days. People chase a chlorine problem for weeks without realizing the actual failure is diluted stabilizer.
Calcium hardness drops too, which matters more in a plaster pool than most people think. Soft water is aggressive and will pull calcium out of the plaster surface over time.
Rain is acidic, so pH and alkalinity fall
Rainwater typically lands somewhere in the 5.0 to 5.5 pH range naturally, and in some conditions lower. It is well below your target of 7.4 to 7.6, so a heavy rain drags pool pH down with it.
Total alkalinity takes the hit at the same time, and that is the more serious problem. Alkalinity is the buffer that keeps pH stable. Once it drops below roughly 80 ppm, your pH starts swinging wildly with every small change, and low pH water is corrosive to plaster, grout, metal fittings and the salt cell if you have one.
Always correct alkalinity first, then pH. Fixing pH while alkalinity is low just means doing it again tomorrow.
What blows and washes in
Rain does not fall only into the pool. It runs across the deck, the roof, the mulch beds and the lawn, and it brings that material with it.

The order to rebalance in
- Skim and net out organic debris before dosing anything
- Test and correct total alkalinity into the 80 to 120 ppm range
- Bring pH to 7.4 to 7.6
- Shock the pool, especially after a large rain event
- Check cyanuric acid once things stabilize and top up toward 30 to 50 ppm if diluted
- Run the filter longer than usual and brush the walls
If the water level rose above the skimmer mouth, drain the excess down so skimming works properly again.
Rain in the Florida Keys
We get a genuine wet season here, roughly May through October, layered on top of storm season from June through November. Afternoon downpours are routine, and they arrive fast and hard rather than as a slow drizzle, so dilution happens in one shot.
Very few Keys pools have screen cages, which means we take the full rainfall plus whatever the wind carried into it. Combine that with intense UV that already burns chlorine faster than most of the country, and diluted stabilizer becomes a real recurring problem down here. A pool that goes through a rainy stretch without a CYA check is the most common green pool we get called about.
Keep a test kit handy and check the water after any rain that leaves the deck soaked, because ten minutes of testing prevents a week of clearing a green pool.
