How Does a Heat Wave Affect Pool Water?

Heat accelerates everything. Chlorine is consumed faster, algae and bacteria multiply much more quickly above 85 degrees, pH tends to rise, and evaporation drops the water level and concentrates minerals. During a heat wave, test more often and increase both chlorine and pump run time.

Heat speeds up every chemical and biological process in your pool at once. Chlorine gets consumed faster, algae and bacteria reproduce far more quickly, pH drifts upward, and evaporation pulls the water level down while concentrating whatever is left behind.

The practical response is straightforward. Test more often, chlorinate more, and run the pump longer. A heat wave is not the time to hold your normal schedule.

Chlorine disappears faster

Two things are working against you. Higher water temperature accelerates the reactions that consume chlorine, and heat waves come with intense sun, which destroys chlorine through UV directly.

Above about 85 degrees, sanitizer demand climbs noticeably. A pool that comfortably held 2 ppm through a mild week can be at zero within a day when the water hits ninety.

Make sure cyanuric acid is in the 30 to 50 ppm range before the heat arrives. Stabilizer is what protects chlorine from UV, and a low reading during a heat wave is the fastest route to a green pool. Dose chlorine in the evening so it works overnight instead of burning off in the first hours of sun.

Algae grows exponentially

Warm water is a growth medium. Algae that would take a week to become visible at 78 degrees can bloom in a day or two at 90, and bacteria multiply on the same curve. Bather load usually spikes during a heat wave too, adding sweat, sunscreen and body oils to the chlorine demand.

Brush more often during hot stretches. Algae anchors to plaster before it becomes visible, and brushing the shaded corners, steps and behind ladders is what exposes it to sanitizer.

pH rises and evaporation concentrates everything

Heat drives carbon dioxide out of the water, and losing CO2 pushes pH up. High pH makes chlorine dramatically less effective, so you can have a good chlorine reading and poor sanitizing at the same time. Test pH more frequently and keep it at 7.4 to 7.6.

Evaporation is the other half. A pool can lose a quarter inch or more a day in extreme heat, and more with wind. As water leaves, the dissolved solids stay, so calcium hardness, salt and cyanuric acid all concentrate. Top off with fresh water and keep the level at the middle of the skimmer mouth, because a low level means the pump sucks air and can lose prime.

What to change during a hot stretch

  • Test chlorine and pH every day or two instead of weekly
  • Increase pump run time, since circulation is your defense against algae
  • Raise salt cell output, since demand went up even if production did not
  • Shock after any heavy swim day
  • Brush walls and steps twice a week
  • Watch the water level daily and top off before it drops below the skimmer

Heat in the Florida Keys

Our summer water temperatures regularly climb into the upper eighties and can push past 90 in a shallow pool with no shade. That is warm enough that a pool stops being refreshing and starts being a chemistry management problem.

Very few pools here have screen cages or meaningful shade, so the water takes full sun from morning to evening at a latitude where the UV index sits at 10 or above for much of the year. That combination of hot water and extreme UV is why Keys pools need more attention in July and August than almost anywhere else.

Heat season also overlaps storm season from June through November, so you often get a stretch of intense sun burning off chlorine followed by a downpour diluting what is left. Test after both.

During a heat wave, check the water every couple of days instead of every week, because the margin between a clear pool and a green one gets very thin when the water is in the nineties.
