How Do I Find a Leak in My Pool?

Start by confirming the leak is real with a bucket test, then narrow the location using three clues: where the water stops falling, whether loss changes when the pump runs, and dye testing at suspect points.

Most residential pool leaks are found this way without any specialized equipment. Only underground plumbing leaks genuinely require professional pressure testing and listening gear.

Step one: confirm it is a leak

Fill a five gallon bucket with pool water, set it on the second step so it is partly submerged, mark the level inside and outside, turn off the auto-fill, and leave it 24 hours with nobody swimming.

If both levels drop equally, that is evaporation, which normally runs about a quarter inch a day. If the pool level drops more than the bucket, you have a leak.

Step two: let the water find the leak

Stop topping off and let the pool drop on its own. This is the single most useful diagnostic there is, and it costs nothing but patience.

  • Level stops just below the skimmer mouth: the leak is at the skimmer, almost always the joint where the plastic throat meets the shell.
  • Level stops at the light ring: the leak is at the light niche or conduit.
  • Level stops at a return fitting: the return fitting or its plumbing.
  • Level stops at the tile line: failed grout or an expansion joint.
  • Level keeps dropping to the main drain or below: a main drain, deep plumbing or shell issue.

Do not let the water drop far enough to expose a vinyl liner or, on a high water table property, low enough to risk the shell. Stop and call a professional before it gets there.

Step three: pump on versus pump off

Repeat the bucket test twice, once running the pump on the normal schedule and once with the pump off entirely for 24 hours.

Worse with the pump running points to the pressure side, meaning the return plumbing, the heater, the filter or the equipment pad. Worse with the pump off points to the suction side or the shell, since suction lines are under vacuum while running and under static pressure when off. Equal in both cases suggests a structural leak in the shell.

Step four: dye test the suspects

You need still water. Turn the pump off, wait at least an hour, and pick a day without wind chop.

Get in the water slowly with leak detection dye or plain food coloring in a syringe. Move to a suspect spot, hold very still, and release a small amount of dye an inch or two away. If there is a leak, the dye stream will be pulled steadily into the crack. If it just diffuses in a cloud, that spot is fine.

Check, in order, the skimmer throat, around the light niche, each return fitting, any visible crack in plaster, the main drain cover, and the tile line.

Step five: walk the equipment pad

Do this in daylight with the pump running. Look for drips at pump seals and unions, wet ground under the filter, corroded fittings, and moisture at heater connections. Equipment pad leaks are the most common leaks we find and the easiest to fix. Also check whether the backwash valve is passing water, since a worn multiport spider gasket sends a continuous trickle down the waste line and mimics a pool leak perfectly.

When to call a professional

Call when the bucket test confirms loss, the pad is dry, and dye testing turns up nothing. That pattern usually means underground plumbing, which requires pressure testing and acoustic listening equipment to locate without tearing up deck.

Call immediately if you see settling deck, sinkholes near the pool, or persistently soggy ground. Water escaping behind the shell erodes the soil supporting the structure.

Leak detection in Key West and the Keys

Salt air corrodes equipment pad hardware faster here than almost anywhere, so check unions, clamps and fasteners first on a Keys pool. We find a lot of leaks that turn out to be a corroded fitting or a hardened o-ring.

Our high water table also matters. Never drain a pool here to hunt for a leak without professional guidance, because groundwater pressure can float or crack an empty shell. And because evaporation runs high year round in this climate, always run the bucket test rather than assuming a fast-dropping level means a leak.
