Does a Pool Need Service in Winter in Florida?

Yes. Pools in Florida need weekly service every month of the year. There is no closing season here because there is no freeze, the water never goes dormant, and most people are still swimming in January.

What changes in winter is the intensity of the demand, not the existence of it. You need less chlorine and shorter pump run times, but you still need testing, brushing, debris removal and equipment checks on the same weekly rhythm.

There is no winterizing in Florida

Up north, closing a pool means draining lines, adding antifreeze, installing a solid cover and walking away for five months. That entire process exists to protect plumbing from freezing.

We do not have that problem, and the northern playbook actively hurts a Florida pool. Shutting a system down here means still water in a warm climate, which is exactly how you get a green pool and a mosquito breeding site. Never drain a Florida pool for the season either. Our water table is high and an empty shell is at risk of hydrostatic damage regardless of the time of year.

The system stays running. You just run it less.

What actually changes in winter

Cooler water and lower sun angle reduce your chemical demand meaningfully.

• Chlorine burns off more slowly, so weekly doses drop
• Algae grows slower below about 70 degrees, though it does not stop
• Pump run time can usually be cut back a few hours a day
• Salt cells produce less chlorine in cold water, so output settings often need to go up even though demand went down

That last point catches people. A salt system in cool water can quietly underproduce while you assume it is handling things.

What still needs doing every week

Testing and balancing, because pH drifts regardless of season and low alkalinity is corrosive in any temperature. Brushing walls, steps and shaded corners, because those are where algae takes hold first. Emptying skimmer and pump baskets. Vacuuming. Checking filter pressure. Emptying the cleaner bag.

Debris does not take the winter off in Florida either. Palms drop fronds year round, and dry season winds move a lot of material.

Do not let it go green while you are away

Seasonal residents who head north for the summer sometimes shut things down on the way out. Standing green water becomes a mosquito nursery within days in this climate, and in Monroe County a neglected pool can draw a nuisance complaint and a citation. It is also far more expensive to bring a green pool back than to have kept it running.

If you are away, keep the pump on a timer and have someone service the pool on a regular schedule.

Winter in the Florida Keys specifically

Our winter is the busy swimming season, not the off season. Water temperatures in the Keys typically sit in the seventies through January and February, air temperatures are comfortable, and this is when the vacation rental calendar fills up. A pool that looks neglected in February is a problem in a way it never is anywhere else in the country.

Our dry season also runs roughly November through April, which means less rain diluting chemistry but more evaporation and windborne dust. Salt air keeps working on fittings and equipment year round with no cold stretch to slow it down, and the UV here stays strong enough in January to matter for chlorine loss.

Treat winter as a lighter version of the same weekly routine, because the pool that gets skipped for three “easy” months is the one that needs a full recovery in spring.
